New DeLorean

It’s Here! Meet the New DeLorean

After months of waiting and dreaming, it’s finally here. Drive into the future with the all-new, all-electric DeLorean Alpha5.

News of an electric DeLorean first dropped during Super Bowl Sunday, when the reborn DeLorean Motor Cars (DMC) revealed a gullwing silhouette and a “V” like logo that’s echoed here in the new car’s “Alpha5” naming (V = 5, in this case). And, now, it’s finally here.

It’s a great-looking car, too, featuring styling by ItalDesign— the same company behind the striking looks of the 1980s BTTF icon. But, while the car was designed by some of the DMC OGs, it’s important to note that this is an entirely new company that has no relation to the original. That company, founded by John Z. DeLorean in 1975, went bankrupt in 1982 amid a swirl of scandal and drug money. This new company, headed by Tesla and Karma alum, Joost De Vries, acquired the original DMC’s logo and parts inventory, and has been operating as a service and restoration company for classic DMC-12s.

Until now, obviously.

The new Alpha5 is one of four new DeLorean designs promised for 2022 by De Vries on the Electrify News Podcast, which will be making their debuts as part of the buildup to the reveal of the actual car “IRL” at Pebble Beach later this summer. But, while this new DeLorean carries some styling cues from the original— the louvers, gullwing doors, and pronounced “accent line” running horizontally across the body— it doesn’t feel derivative. It’s evolutionary, then, rather than a redo of the angular original.

And, speaking of the original, this new electric DeLorean also has a special truck up its sleeve around the 88 mph mark. In this case, it’s speed. Unlike the original DMC-12’s leisurely 10.5-second 0-60 time, the new one promises a positively screaming 0-88 mph rush in just 4.35 seconds.

Which, you know— is some serious s#!^!

Pricing, exact range, and charging specs are yet to be announced, but we expect the car to compete, price-wise, with the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S in that 90-120K range. You can take a look at the new car for yourself in the photo gallery, below, then let us know what you think of the new ItalDesign shape— and how it compares to some other concepts— in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
